Given Up on Liberty

If we cannot trust sophisticated modern Europeans to run their own lives, why should anyone think we should wish for Iraqis to be in charge of theirs?

Europeans cannot be trusted to govern themselves. Their affairs will be administered by an EU oligarchy. And if they do not trust their own populations, European leaders are scarcely going to support handing out freedom to anarchic tribal societies that scarcely know what the right to vote is for.

It’s a very plausible reason for the cold views from Europe on democratic experiment in Iraq. European’s do not believe in self government any more. They truly believe that an elite can make the big choices for the little people and everything will be much better. Unfortunately it has been tried before and failed every time.
