Choose Your Totalitarianism

The growing problem of Princes wearing fancy dress has become a major topic of conversation in Brussels. The latest move, by MEP’s from the New Member States, is to ask what the difference between Black Shirts and Red Flags is.
A group of MEPs from central and eastern Europe has called for a mooted Europe-wide ban on Nazi symbols to be broadened to cover symbols from other regimes. Led by centre-right Hungarian and Lithuanian MEPs József Szájer and Vytautas Landsbergis, the euro-parliamentarians on Thursday said there was a "a double standard in treating the extreme right and extreme left ideologies" in Europe.
Well two wrongs would not make a right, but the logic is compelling. Why the difference? EU Justice Commissioner Franco Frattini, the one who replaced that religious extremist who thinks that families need fathers, is not convinced. Speaking on Euronews, he said that the hammer and sickle was different, because several communist parties were still using it. I sometimes doubt my logic processes, because such comments really come across as strange and illogical. The Nazi Symbols which are not used by anyone are a threat, but the Hammer and Sickle which are still used by Stalinist apologists are not a threat. Either Senor Frattini is an idiot or I am. I’ll let you choose.
