Cheers to the Germans

Bearing in mind the amount involved, it will only be a symbolic victory. However, in the area of tax, every victory is important. We are also talking about Beer.

Beer drinkers may celebrate Tuesday if European Union finance ministers fail to increase duties on alcohol, as looks likely, according to EU diplomats. "I don't think there will be a deal as the Germans won't move," an EU official said.
So Cheers to the Germans, and whilst we're at it, lets wish we had a government with the balls to stand up for whats important to us.

Stap me - I thought I followed EU chicanery rather more closely than most but I simply DID NOT KNOW that the EUSSR imposed duties on its own products. WTF?

Bloody hell. I need a drink.

They impose minimum tax rates for certain types of products, alcohol being one of them. The proceeds go to the national governments not The UESR.

shouldn't affect us, the rates here are already hugely higher than continental rates, and maintaning the differential would be stupid, as it's the differential that drives illegal imports and loses the treasury money. Closing the differential is what is needed.

On the other hand, a choice between sanity or stupidity? The EU? And GORDON BROWN....

hmmmm.

I think we should harmonize beer taxes across the EU - taking the Czech Republic as the bench-mark.
