That has nothing to do with free speech

Whenever politicains want to do something controversial, they get their retorts in first. The EU is not trying to control free speech.

EU proposals to regulate content on the internet are aimed at protecting society not undermining free speech, European Union Media Commissioner Viviane Reding says.
Who are we to question her. As a blogger however, any effort at regulating the internet worries me. So why do they want to so it?
She said the proposed regulations reflected "basic societal values" - the protection of young children and restrictions on incitement to hatred.
Reflecting on the fact that I spend my time online inciting people to hate the EU, that doesn't really answer my fears.

Thanks to AntiCitizenOne for the tip.

There's nothing wrong with hate. It's a perfectly natural human emotion, just as love, happiness or anger is. But the thought police allow us only to have 'positive emotions'.

Believe it or not the Americans have beaten them to this one. The McCain-Feingold amendment seeks to regulate all political bloggers in the US under the guise of controlling corporate donations to political campaigns.

At keast the internet is not constrained by national boundaries. If even the Chinese cannot control it I doubt the tame EU can.

Of course the biggest question that should be asked is: Why does an organisation that claims to be democratic, open and all in favour of free speach actully need a "media commissioner" anyway?

Why not fire the bugger (along with all his expensive minions)? It'd save money and demonstrate that the organisation in question actually practices what it preaches.

Oh, sorry. I forgot which organsation we were discussing for a moment.

Doesn't matter what it is aimed at, it's what it will do that matters.
