Vlaclav Klaus

One of my favourite Politicians was on BBC world yesterday evening. Short and to the point this is what he had to say:
Europeanism is based on two assumptions:
  1. Nation states are a left over from the past, they have no future.
  2. The individual cannot be responsible for his own actions, he must be controlled from the centre.
Nearly all European Leaders, whether left or right have accepted this argument.
He added that he believed the pendulum would swing and the EU would break up at some point. On cue, his interviewer asked if that meant a return to the bad old days of conflict. His Reply:
The idea that opposition to the EU can only be from Nationalism is a cheap argument. It reminds me of Soviet era politicians who always tried to claim there was no alternative. The real alternative is friendly cooperation between states.
He is the most senior European politician that shares my beliefs. If only there were more like him.
